Green Parents

This may be a little early, but I like to finish my shopping/gift making before Thanksgiving. What are you planning for stocking stuffers this year? I plan on making some glitter gel for my daughter, and recycled mini sketch books (I own a binding machine), but I am on the look out for some new ideas :)

I too like to shop early! Glad I am not the only one! I am planning on giving my daughter an eco-friendly toothbrush, tractor (her favorite) and bubble bath. I'm not making anything homemade for her, but am making some felt blocks for my great nephew and a blanket and felt star ornaments for my mom. I'm not much help!
How do you make the glitter gel? I'd love to try it!

I found a recipe online (quite possibly through a link here) that was super easy - aloe gel and superfine glitter. My daughter loved the princess make up she got as a gift last year, but who knows what was in it. I was able to quietly and slowly get rid of it all. Now I'm looking for natural alternatives. We love the Burt's Bees lip balm, but does anyone know of a natural lip balm that has a kid or holiday themed label? Otherwise, I may just print princess pictures on stickers and put those over the Burt's Bees.

I give my daughter makeup from my company LOL
she asks for it, so works for me :)
and is perfect size for stocking
might through in a flashdrive I saw that's made with bamboo casing but haven't found "the" one she likes yet (she's big into electronics, techno stuff)

That's cool you can make your own sketch books!!!

We always put in some organic candy, and I've already purchased some pastels for the stockings. For my hubby I'm giving him a new Earthlust bottle. No shopping required for that.....will just go to my inventory shelf! I love the idea of making glitter gel though...my princess would LOVE that!

Yeah, I'm definitely going to try the glitter gel too. My eldest got some makeup for her b-day (she is 6) and it was really scary looking. I managed to get rid of it by letting her "paint" pictures with it on paper. For the glitter gel, what kind of container do you put it in?

Affordable Mineral Makeup has a lot of natural lip balm and lip gloss. It doesn't have little girl packaging but you could easily put stickers on it! www.purelynaturalminerals.com

The glitter gel is a great idea, but I was wondering the same thing. What type of packaging do you put it in?

I always put socks in the stockings! Our local health food store sells organic socks, and they are wonderful!

SaveYourWorld.com has lip balms and other items. Each item purchased saves one acre of rain forest for one year.

I was going to use the tins that my hand salve comes in. You could also use little mint tins or the ones for scrapbooking embellishments. Come to think of it, lots of the little containers that brads, eyelets and other small scrapbook items are packaged in would work, too.

Every year we give our girls their own Christmas ornament. The idea is that when they leave home, they will already have a collection of ornaments for their own trees. The ornaments they have received so far are a combination of homemade and store bought. My favorite of the homemade ornaments are the reindeer we made with popsicle sticks, then painted. Super easy and very cute!

I just saw Fair Indigo has added ornaments to their offerings. They are a company offering fair trade items, some of which are also organic. The ornaments are in the Baby & Gifts section under the Home category.

Thanks for the glitter gel idea!

We have a tradition of getting a personalized ornament for each new baby in the family. We used to buy them at Wal Mart and have them engraved. Now we can't get them there. We have started looking for ones made from materials that will last a lifeteme, but not 1000 lifetimes. One source that we found was a website specializing in letters from Santa. They have other tabs on their homepage and when we looked under Santa gifts, we found several ornaments that can be personalized with names, dates, photos, etc. While still bought, and not entirely made, these seem more earth friendly than the metallic plated ones. That site is www.ezsantaletters.com, if anyone wants to take a look.
